Jim Riley is a partner in the firm's Technology group and a co-chair of Goodwin’s Intellectual Property practice group. He also serves as the chair of the firm’s Silicon Valley office. He specializes in the representation of emerging growth technology companies and venture capital firms in the areas of intellectual property strategy, protection and exploitation, technology transactions and strategic partnering deals, technology acquisition, licensing and commercialization, artificial intelligence and machine learning, open source licensing and compliance, data privacy and security, and joint venture and spin-off transactions. His practice also focuses on the intellectual property and technology aspects of venture capital financings, public offerings, and mergers and acquisitions.

Jim's expertise spans a broad array of industries, including computer software and hardware, artificial intelligence and machine learning, mobile applications, open source, SaaS and cloud computing, fintech, blockchain and digital currency, networking, gaming, advertising, social networking, e-commerce and music/entertainment, as well as medical device, biotechnology and pharma. He also has considerable experience in all aspects of intellectual property and high-tech commercial litigation, including patent, copyright, trade secret, trademark and unfair competition matters.
