Goodwin announced today the opening of a new office in Brussels, the epicenter for EU policy, legislation and enforcement. Together with Goodwin’s existing US and UK-based Antitrust and Competition teams, the office will expand the firm’s capability to serve as a one-stop shop for its global clients.
The firm also announced that leading EU and UK competition law lawyer Stephen Mavroghenis will join Goodwin as partner, based in the new Brussels office. Stephen will be the latest addition to the firm’s European antitrust, competition and foreign investment platform, launched in 2022 with the hire of London partner Sarah Jordan and further enhanced in 2023 by the arrival of London partner Eram Khan. Goodwin expects to initially build a small team around Stephen, with its London, Brussels and US teams working as one integrated team to serve the firm's clients on all of their antitrust, competition and foreign direct investment needs.
“Expanding our antitrust and competition presence to Brussels is the natural extension of our recent growth in the US and UK with the goal of offering our clients a leading transatlantic practice,” said Andrew Lacy, Co-Chair of Goodwin's Antitrust and Competition practice. “We are delighted to welcome Stephen to the firm to launch the firm’s Brussels office. His deep background in EU and UK competition law and extensive experience advising across our clients’ industries of focus will further bolster the firm’s support for clients facing global antitrust challenges.”
With a career spanning industries including high-tech, life sciences, manufacturing, and media, among others, Stephen has guided multinational corporations through complex mergers, acquisitions, joint ventures, conduct investigations, and litigation before the European Commission in Brussels, the European Courts in Luxembourg, and the UK Competition and Markets Authority. He has also defended clients against allegations of cartel activity, abuse of dominance, and intellectual property disputes.
“I am looking forward to joining Goodwin at such a pivotal time for antitrust and competition law,” said Stephen Mavroghenis. “This is an exciting opportunity to leverage my expertise and contribute to the firm’s commitment to delivering exceptional support for clients across key industries.”
