While Goodwin's arrival into the Philadelphia legal marketplace may slightly raise the competitive pressures on homegrown law firms, leaders in the city hope that the entry of another Am Law 50 firm will raise the region’s profile as a life sciences transactional hub, according to The Legal Intelligencer. The City of Brotherly Love has been the site of expansion of major national firms seeking to expand their northeast footprint with a focus on life sciences and healthcare transactions, often by raiding sizeable teams from peer Big Law practices. In an interview last week, Mitchell Bloom, chair of the Life Sciences practice, touted his firm’s attractiveness to potential laterals, saying very few firms can stack up to his firm’s depth in private equity, technology and life sciences. “I think our strategy, which is probably a little different than other firms, is our industry focus in substantive areas of law,” Bloom said, adding that Goodwin firm leaders want to be a “significant player” in Philadelphia’s legal market.
