One hundred years ago, on April 15, 1912, the RMS Titanic sank in the north Atlantic Ocean.
In the winter of 1912, Goodwin Procter founder Robert Goodwin represented Mary Newell against the White Star Line, owner of the ill-fated Titanic, in a claim involving the loss of life of her husband, Arthur, who was among the 1,517 passengers to perish in the shipwreck.
The claim asserted that the loss of lives on board the Titanic, including the life of Arthur W. Newell, was caused by the wrongful acts, neglect, fault and negligence of the White Star Line and its crew.
Ms. Newell claimed the sum of $110,400 – the loss of the life of her husband in the sum of $110,000, and the loss of the luggage and personal effects in the sum of $400.
Ms. Newell's daughter Marjorie, one of the last remaining survivors of the Titanic, died in 1992, at age 103.
