BOSTON, March 15, 2007 — Goodwin Procter LLP, a national law firm with more than 700 attorneys, today announced the addition of Gary A. Beller as a partner to the firm’s Financial Services practice in New York. Beller brings to the firm a unique combination of high-level experience at leading global financial organizations as well as financial services law expertise that will further enhance Goodwin Procter’s practice in this area.
Most recently, Beller served as legal advisor to Marsh & McLennan Companies (MMC), where he was involved in matters across MMC’s businesses, including issues related to its investment management business and its insurance brokerage operations.
“We are delighted that Gary has chosen to join Goodwin Procter,” said Gregory J. Lyons, chairman of the Financial Services Group at Goodwin Procter. “Our financial services practice offers a full range of services in multiple disciplines, permitting our attorneys to work efficiently together as a team – across disciplines and offices – providing clients with innovation solutions. With his more than 30 years of experience in business law, Gary is a welcome addition to our team.”
Prior to MMC, Beller was senior executive vice president and chief legal officer of MetLife, Inc. and the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company, where he had responsibility for legal affairs that included law, government and industry relations, corporate governance, and MetLife’s privacy office. He also had responsibility for the company’s mergers and acquisitions department as well as its asset management businesses. Prior to MetLife, Beller served as general counsel and executive vice president at American Express.
Beller’s practice focuses on matters involving banking, investment management, life insurance, insurance brokerage, corporate governance, mergers and acquisitions, and asset management. In working on these matters, he has had extensive dealings with state and federal regulators, including Attorneys General, insurance and banking commissioners, and federal banking and securities officials.
Beller currently serves on the boards of the MetLife Bank and IMSA, the Insurance Marketplace Standards Association, a market conduct and compliance standards-setting organization serving the life insurance marketplace.
