Adam Kopald is a partner in Goodwin’s Real Estate Industry group and its Hospitality & Leisure, Real Estate Joint Venture, Secondaries, and Real Estate Finance and Restructuring practices. His practice focuses on commercial real estate and he represents investors and operators in connection with the acquisition, sale, development, financing and restructuring of all property types, including office, multifamily residential (including luxury apartments and student housing), industrial, medical office, hotels and resorts, including branded condominiums, spas, casinos, and golf courses. He also has particular depth representing owners/developers and equity investors in structuring complex joint ventures (including platform joint ventures), public and private REITs, comingled funds, and other investment vehicles for the acquisition and development of individual and multiple properties.

Adam works with some of the largest institutional investors, real estate developers, sponsors, REITs, insurance companies, and family offices in the United States, including DiamondRock Hospitality Company, HEI Hotels & Resorts, Magna Hospitality Group, L.C., Newbond Holdings, Rethink Healthcare Real Estate (formerly Seavest), Rockwood Capital, and Savanna Real Estate Partners.

Adam has a detailed understanding of hotel operations and critical business functions that impact the ownership and operation of hotels and resorts and other similar real estate investments that are coupled with an operating business and has negotiated dozens of hotel management and franchise agreements on behalf of hotel owners.

Adam started his career in the New York office of Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP.

Experience

Some of Adam’s recent work includes representing:

  • A nationally recognized real estate investment management client in connection with:
    • the formation of a $200 million distressed hotel investment joint venture with the State of Wisconsin Investment Board
    • the acquisition and financing of a $76 million Florida light industrial portfolio
    • the acquisition and financing of the Westin Perimeter Atlanta
    • the disposition of The Muse Hotel in New York’s Times Square
    • the sale of a seven asset full-service urban and resort portfolio to foreign investors for more than $650 million
  • DiamondRock Hospitality Company in an acquisition of Cavallo Point: The Lodge at the Golden Gate; the acquisition was structured as an UPREIT, together with a long-term leasehold interest in the luxury resort
  • Newbond Holdings on its $85 million acquisition of the Hilton Times Square
  • Rockwood Capital in connection with:
    • A joint venture with Mill Creek Residential Trust for the acquisition, financing and development of a $47 million multi-family project in Miami, Florida
    • A joint venture with Tritec Real Estate for the acquisition, financing, development and subsequent sale of a $147 million multi-family apartment building in Lindenhurst, New York
    • The sale of a $104 million student housing facility in New York city structured as a sale of co-op interest
  • Savanna in connection with:
    • The $880 million recapitalization of its 1.5 million-square-foot tower in Long Island City
    • The $98 million disposition of 434 Broadway in New York’s SoHo
    • The $265 million disposition of 31 Penn Plaza 
  • Seavest Healthcare Properties LLC on the $1 billion recapitalization of a portion of the company’s medical office portfolio in a joint venture transaction with Nuveen Real Estate, as well as the transfer of the underlying real estate
  • Tommy Bahama in a joint venture in connection with its first branded hotel, the Tommy Bahama Mira Monte Resort
  • A Florida-based real estate investment company focused on the acquisition and operation of self-storage properties in its $350 million recapitalization of a portfolio of 53 self-storage properties in five states 

PROFESSIONAL ACTIVITIES

Adam serves on the Program Planning Committee and has been a featured speaker for the Americas Lodging Investment Summit (ALIS), the leading hotel conference in the United States.
