California Legal Awards Name Karen Ubell a Woman Leader in Tech Law

Goodwin partner Karen Ubell has been recognized by The Recorder’s 2024 California Legal Awards as a Woman Leader in Tech Law. The annual awards celebrate the significant achievements of California’s most innovative lawyers and companies. The Women Leaders in Tech Law category recognizes women lawyers handling the game-changing, law-shaping, market moving work in and around the tech sector.

Based in Goodwin’s San Francisco office, Ms. Ubell is Co-Chair of the firm’s Digital Currency & Blockchain practice and a member of the firm’s Technology group. She practices general corporate and securities law and is renowned for offering in-depth regulatory advice, often at the product level, in connection with the implementation, adoption, launch and distribution of novel blockchain protocols, distributed networks, cryptocurrencies, NFTs and other digital assets. Ms. Ubell’s expertise and prior experience as an attorney in the Division of Corporation Finance at the US Securities and Exchange Commission allow her to provide nuanced and thoughtful insights to leading financial technology innovators and investors.

Among Ms. Ubell’s recent accomplishments, she has advised a number of projects in connection with the launch and distribution of digital assets including, most recently, advising Matter Labs, a leading and emerging company in the digital currency and blockchain sector, in connection with the launch of the ZK token on June 17, 2024. One of the largest token distributions in the cryptocurrency space this year, Ms. Ubell worked closely with the Matter Labs team to thoughtfully design and structure the ZK token, as well as the mechanisms of its distribution.

Ms. Ubell has also been recognized for her work in the 2024 Chambers Fintech guide as a Leading Lawyer for Blockchain & Cryptocurrencies and Crypto-Asset Disputes; by the Legal 500 US as a recommended lawyer for Fintech & Crypto and for Corporate Governance; and in the Who’s Who Legal: Fintech & Blockchain guide.

Ms. Ubell and the other honorees will be recognized at the California Legal Awards ceremony in Los Angeles, CA in October 2024.
